Elegant Hillside Home
These clients modified their recently purchased hillside home to match their personal taste and lifestyle. Originally designed by renowned architect Thomas Ochsner, timeless elegance is the focus for the renovation.
The kitchen was gutted and updated with new hand-hewn, solid wood ceiling beams to match existing beams in the living room. The original master suite and two adjacent bedrooms were converted into a larger, more sophisticated master suite complete with “his” and “her” bathrooms. Her master bathroom features a standing tub. Both bathrooms boast barrel and groin vaulted ceilings. (A groin vault is formed by two barrel vaults that intersect at right angles, creating visually appealing “ribs”.) Window frames in both the kitchen and master suite are made of iron. One of the original bedrooms has been transformed into a new, formal study accented by genuine leather flooring.
Because the owners love to entertain, a new, curved stairway made from metal with tile treads will lead visitors from the main house down to the expansive pool area, featuring a luxurious lap pool. A spacious cabana, complete with bar and fireplace, is tucked into the hillside below the existing house.
The tennis court has been replaced by a new greenhouse, adorned with curved arches eaves, Victorian ridge crests, and non-reflective, glass panels. Raised beds for vegetables and a new chicken coop with a French provincial design are delightful finds elsewhere on the grounds.
