Holani Farms is a simple prefab house—a ranch manager’s home on a horse ranch in Summerland, California. It is a combination of prefab and custom construction. The walls were panelized off-site (instead of being stick-framed on-site) in an attempt to economize, shorten the timeline, and minimize impacts at the job site. The owners of the ranch initially saw it as “just employee housing”; however, they became more engaged during the course of the project and decided to add custom touches (for example, granite top on the kitchen island, custom glass tile splashes, and a floating glass mantle). The end result is a clean, modern interior with a Hawaiian plantation–style prefab house exterior.
